What is Windows 7?

It’s the new operating system from Microsoft. It’s predecessor is Windows Vista, which superseded Windows XP back in January 2007. It has been designed to be more “user centric”, while offering more networking features, such as Homegroup and DirectAccess.

If you’re completely new to Windows 7, the first place that maybe worth having a look at is Windows 7 “Getting Started” page. This page gives you some introduction notes to what it is, what it can do and how to install it.

Also, Microsoft have provided a handy tool called the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor, which you can download onto your computer. Here, it tests your system and reviews your specifications to see whether or not you can run it.

Volume Licensing and Software Assurance

Purchasing Software Assurance for licenses purchased under a volume licensing agreement will give you “new version rights”. This benefit gives you the right to upgrade to the newest version. So if you buy a Vista Business license with SA, you get Windows 7 Professional when it comes out.

New hardware

Many suppliers of new hardware are shipping hardware with Vista Business licenses that are upgradable to Windows 7 Professional when it is available at no extra cost.

Why should I upgrade?

Windows 7 is set to be faster, more secure and more energy efficient than previous operating systems. From hands on experience, it is easier to navigate through documents via the “Library” system, and provides the means of getting to applications quicker via the taskbar. Also, the quick “Window snapping” option allows you to “snap” two windows to each side of the screen without having to manually adjust the size in order to see two windows at once.
